DESCRIPTION:Following the recent discovery of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars residence\, join us for an afternoon’s academic matinée this September at Apothecaries’ Hall as we delve deeper into the relationship between the bard and the apothecary\, tracing the influence of early seventeenth century medicine in Shakespeare’s world. \nEnjoy three talks and Q&A from leading academics\, from Dr Caroline Burgon (University of Birmingham)\, Dr Kaara Peterson (University of Miami)\, and Dr Sarah Dustagheer (University of Kent) that illuminate the medical references within Shakespeare’s texts\, how medicine influenced his performances and his largely untold life in Blackfriars.

DESCRIPTION:Audrey Few Lecture – The Care of Strangers: Frontiers of Humanitarian Action – by Mr Christopher Lockyear \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 \nCare in conflict zones asks more of humanitarians than clinical or programmatic competence. Christopher Lockyear examines what happens when they are thrust into geopolitical crunch points: their role in accountability and testimony where journalism is banned\, their responsibility to their own teams\, and what they concede to reach a patient at all. \nGood intentions are not the only measure when the act of care is itself a form of geopolitical capital. The lecture asks who is spending that capital\, on whose behalf\, and what we should do about it. \nChristopher Lockyear has spent two decades providing medical care where war had stopped it\, in Sudan\, Somalia\, Palestine and Ukraine. For seven and a half years he was Secretary General of Médecins Sans Frontières\, an organisation of nearly 70\,000 staff across more than 70 countries\, and spoke for it at the United Nations Security Council. He is now Executive-in-Residence at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy\, a senior adviser to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue\, and a non-executive director of TRIAL International\, which fights impunity for war crimes.

In this lecture\, Professor Easton explores how anger\, resentment\, even hate\, can arise in an increasingly pressured NHS\, and how these dynamics shape frontline care. Drawing on key insights into “difficult” clinical encounters\, from Freud’s account of the origins of hate to contemporary studies of hostility in healthcare\, he asks how we might protect the compassion at the heart of practice. Could a clearer ethical frame\, in the spirit of John Locke\, help doctors and patients recognise the humanity in each other and rescue a relationship under strain? \nProf Graham Easton is Honorary Professor of Clinical Communication Skills at Queen Mary University of London\, a GP of 30 years’ experience\, and a National Teaching Fellow with Advance HE. His career spans clinical practice\, medical education\, and BBC journalism\, with a particular interest in training doctors in empathic communication\, including how to manage “difficult” and aggressive consultations. \n———– \nPresenting Why are doctors so miserable? (Sydenham Lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Clare Gerada \nProf Clare Gerada trained initially in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital before becoming a GP in South London\, where she has practised for decades.\nLeadership roles:\n• Former Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) (2010–2013).\n• President of the RCGP (2021–2023).\n• Founder and Medical Director of NHS Practitioner Health\, the confidential service for doctors and dentists with mental health or addiction problems. \nAdvocacy: A leading voice on doctors’ wellbeing\, burnout\, and professional identity. Clare has been instrumental in destigmatising mental illness among healthcare professionals. \nPublic service: Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2020 for services to mental health and the NHS. \nPeerage: Clare became a Life Peer in the House of Lords in 2025 as Baroness Gerada \nPublic speaking and writing: Clare frequently speaks and writes on topics such as compassion in medicine\, the emotional labour of doctors\, and the cultural meaning of the NHS.

DESCRIPTION:Gideon De Laune Lecture: Plague and the Global War on Rats – by Prof Christos Lynteris \nMonckton Copeman Lecture: History of wax anatomical models and how they have contributed\, from the 17th century onwards by Dr Roberta Ballestriero \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20 / Lecture & Supper £60\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 / Lecture & Supper £65 \nPresenting Plague and the Global War on Rats (Gideon De Laune Lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Christos Lynteris \nRats are today seen as a sine qua non of plague\, but this is a very recent idea. The lecture explores how the rat became understood as a carrier and spreader of the disease. Contesting that this was simply the result of scientific discoveries\, Christos Lynteris unravels this story by focusing on the Third Plague Pandemic\, a global outbreak of bubonic plague between 1894 and the 1950s that claimed an estimated 15 million lives and transformed the world in complex and enduring ways. Weaving together of epidemiological reasoning and imagination\, the lecture will shed new light to the ways we have approached the relation between plague and rats. \nChristos Lynteris is Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on the anthropological and historical examination of epidemics with a particular focus on zoonotic diseases\, and colonial medicine.
