SUMMARY:John Locke Lecture and the Sydenham Lecture
DESCRIPTION:John Locke Lecture: Hate in Healthcare: from Freud to the Frontline – Prof Graham Easton and the Sydenham Lecture: Why are doctors so miserable? – by Prof Clare Gerada \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20 / Lecture & Supper £60\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 / Lecture & Supper £65 \nPresenting Hate in Healthcare: from Freud to the Frontline (John Locke lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Graham Easton \nOnline abuse\, verbal and physical assaults\, protective screens\, and zero tolerance posters all point to a growing tension between healthcare professionals and patients. In this lecture\, Professor Easton explores how anger\, resentment\, even hate\, can arise in an increasingly pressured NHS\, and how these dynamics shape frontline care. Drawing on key insights into “difficult” clinical encounters\, from Freud’s account of the origins of hate to contemporary studies of hostility in healthcare\, he asks how we might protect the compassion at the heart of practice. Could a clearer ethical frame\, in the spirit of John Locke\, help doctors and patients recognise the humanity in each other and rescue a relationship under strain? \nProf Graham Easton is Honorary Professor of Clinical Communication Skills at Queen Mary University of London\, a GP of 30 years’ experience\, and a National Teaching Fellow with Advance HE. His career spans clinical practice\, medical education\, and BBC journalism\, with a particular interest in training doctors in empathic communication\, including how to manage “difficult” and aggressive consultations. \n———– \nPresenting Why are doctors so miserable? (Sydenham Lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Clare Gerada \nProf Clare Gerada trained initially in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital before becoming a GP in South London\, where she has practised for decades.\nLeadership roles:\n• Former Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) (2010–2013).\n• President of the RCGP (2021–2023).\n• Founder and Medical Director of NHS Practitioner Health\, the confidential service for doctors and dentists with mental health or addiction problems. \nAdvocacy: A leading voice on doctors’ wellbeing\, burnout\, and professional identity. Clare has been instrumental in destigmatising mental illness among healthcare professionals. \nPublic service: Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2020 for services to mental health and the NHS. \nPeerage: Clare became a Life Peer in the House of Lords in 2025 as Baroness Gerada \nPublic speaking and writing: Clare frequently speaks and writes on topics such as compassion in medicine\, the emotional labour of doctors\, and the cultural meaning of the NHS.

SUMMARY:LSO 20th Anniversary Annual City Livery Concert and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating two decades\, the Annual City Livery Concert has become a much-loved fixture in the City of London calendar: both a vibrant showcase of the rich arts and culture of the Square Mile\, and an opportunity for the LSO to express its gratitude to the companies\, clubs and guilds whose continued support enables world-leading music-making on their doorstep. \nConducted by LSO Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano\, this year’s programme opens with Anatoly Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake. Bursting with orchestral colour and atmosphere\, this miniature masterpiece of Russian Romanticism conjures a magical\, dreamlike world that feels both mysterious and utterly transporting. Mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron then joins the Orchestra for the world premiere of Hannah Kendall’s I have discovered the secret of death. One of today’s most exciting compositional voices\, Kendall brings a powerful contemporary perspective to this eagerly anticipated new work\, commissioned by the LSO. \nThe evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5\, one of the great orchestral masterpieces: a thrilling journey from darkness to triumph\, filled with unforgettable melodies and sweeping emotion. By turns tragic\, passionate and heroic\, it remains one of the most moving works in the symphonic repertoire. We invite you to bring family to share in this celebratory evening\, and there are a wide range of restaurants and dining options in the Barbican and surrounding area should you wish to make a full evening of your visit. \nThe concert will begin at 7pm. Ahead of the performance\, you are warmly invited to a pre-concert reception from 6.15pm. The reception will continue in the interval. \nTickets cost £68 per person\, or £58 per person for a group booking of ten or more guests. Please book your tickets via https://www.lso.co.uk/Livery2026. For group bookings of ten or more\, please contact the LSO directly at rsvp@lso.co.uk. \nWe hope many Liverymen and their guests will be able to join us for what promises to be a memorable evening of music.

SUMMARY:The Annual Spectacle Makers' Lecture
DESCRIPTION:How do people with age-related eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration see the world? How do they recognise faces\, find something on a supermarket shelf\, or cope with driving? \nTo find out more\, we invite you to join us on Monday 2 November 2026 for the annual Spectacle Makers’ Lecture. This will be given by Professor David Crabb\, Professor of Statistics and Vision Research at City St George’s\, University of London. \nThe Lecture is taking place at 18.15 in the Royal Society of Medicine’s Guy Whittle Auditorium (at 1 Wimpole Street\, London W1G 0AE). \nProfessor Crabb will be speaking about The Patient’s View: Quality of Life and Driving in Age-Related Eye Disease. We still know relatively little about how different levels of vision loss affect a person’s ability to carry out everyday tasks\, especially driving. One approach is to measure patient performance in controlled laboratory tasks. Another is simply to ask patients themselves. The latter can be especially revealing\, helping to demystify assumptions about how people perceive the world with progressive vision loss. \nProfessor Crabb will argue that understanding everyday impacts is vital for clinical care and trials – and that outcomes should reflect what matters to patients\, not just what happens on an eye chart or in a vision test. \nAs well as the Lecture and audience Q&A session\, tickets provide access to a post-Lecture reception\, where the conversation will continue over drinks and canapés. Tickets cost £55\, with discounted tickets for students.

SUMMARY:Lord Mayor's Show Day at Stationers' Hall
DESCRIPTION:Members of Livery Companies and their families are invited to a two-course buffet lunch after what has been termed: “the greatest free show on earth”. This gives the perfect opportunity for all family members of those connected with Livery Companies\, especially children and grandchildren\, to experience Stationers’ Hall before and after the fabulous display of the Lord Mayor’s procession – bands\, horsemen\, coaches\, soldiers and many exciting floats and entertainers. \nThe Hall will be open from 10.15 am to 11.00 am for coffee\, tea and biscuits and then will close until 12.30 pm. At 12.15 pm the Lord Mayor’s coach pauses at St Paul’s for a blessing on the steps of the Cathedral\, after which the Lord Mayor moves down Ludgate Hill on his way to the Royal Courts in the Strand. \nAt 12.30 pm a two-course hot buffet lunch will be served in the Hall\, together with a glass of wine (soft drinks for children). A voucher will be issued to those who have bought tickets on entering Stationers’ Hall for lunch. SUMMARY:Gideon De Laune Lecture and Monckton Copeman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Gideon De Laune Lecture: Plague and the Global War on Rats – by Prof Christos Lynteris \nMonckton Copeman Lecture: History of wax anatomical models and how they have contributed\, from the 17th century onwards by Dr Roberta Ballestriero \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20 / Lecture & Supper £60\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 / Lecture & Supper £65 \nPresenting Plague and the Global War on Rats (Gideon De Laune Lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Christos Lynteris \nRats are today seen as a sine qua non of plague\, but this is a very recent idea. The lecture explores how the rat became understood as a carrier and spreader of the disease. Contesting that this was simply the result of scientific discoveries\, Christos Lynteris unravels this story by focusing on the Third Plague Pandemic\, a global outbreak of bubonic plague between 1894 and the 1950s that claimed an estimated 15 million lives and transformed the world in complex and enduring ways. Weaving together of epidemiological reasoning and imagination\, the lecture will shed new light to the ways we have approached the relation between plague and rats. \nChristos Lynteris is Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on the anthropological and historical examination of epidemics with a particular focus on zoonotic diseases\, and colonial medicine. He is the author of 6 books\, the most recent of which is How Plague Got Rats: Mastering a Zoonotic Pandemic (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2026). \n———— \nPresenting History of wax anatomical models and how they have contributed\, from the 17th century onwards\, to the development of medical education (Monckton Copeman Lecture)\nTo be given by Dr Roberta Ballestriero \nHistory of wax anatomical models and how they have contributed\, from the 17th century onwards\, to the development of medical education.

SUMMARY:Cart Marking – Worshipful Company of Carmen
DESCRIPTION:The regulation of carts dates back over 750 years to the early days of the City\, when the ever entrepreneurial Carmen charged cart owners to operate their carts in the City! Having paid for a licence\, a mark would be burnt onto your wooden cart to allow that cart to ply for trade ‘for hire or reward’ for the forthcoming year. To enable that cart to continue in use\, a new mark would be branded each year on payment of the licence fee. \nEvery year the Cart Marking Parade re-enacts the branding ceremony\, vehicles are no longer limited to wooden carts\, of course; the parade now includes horse-drawn carriages\, steam engines\, fire engines\, vans\, ambulances\, bicycles\, removal vans\, electric trucks who parade along Gresham Street and through the Guildhall Arch to be branded for the princely sum of five shillings! \nWhatever the weather on the day\, join us in the Guildhall Courtyard or explore the route parade to see a really eclectic mix of all things wheeled!
