DESCRIPTION:The World Suicide Prevention Day Church Service will be held at All Hallows by the Tower at 6pm on Thursday 10th September 2026. \nThis Service brings the community together in gratitude of all those who strive to prevent suicide and support those affected\, to reaffirm our commitment and action to prevent suicide and shift the culture of silence and stigma to one of openness\, empathy\, and support. \nWorld Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. The theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action to ” Start the Conversation “. This triennial theme spans from 2024 through to this year\, 2026. \nCore Goals of the Theme – \n\nShift from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness\, empathy\, and support.\nEncourage open\, honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour.\nAdvocate for policies that prioritise mental health and increase care access.\nFoster compassion and build understanding around mental health struggles.\n\nBridgeWatch volunteers and The Listening Place will be sharing their reflections during the service and will be available after the service. We are extremely grateful to John F Hunt Ltd for sponsoring this special service and the refreshments. \nThe service is open to the public\, and everyone is very welcome to attend.

Finals 14.30. Prize giving 16.30\nFormat – teams of 5 playing in pools of 4. Tournament paintball over obstacles. Games to take 6 minutes. There will be a plate competition as well as the main finals so all teams get minimum 4 games.\nCOST – £500 per team. The event is for the Paviors’ Charity to support their education mission for children and NEETs\nFood – ticket includes a breakfast bap. Military medicine has always been a speciality. As monastic foundations\, the orders of crusading knights had in-house infirmaries for injured and ailing members. Their skill in medical care was also a resource they shared. Pilgrimage and crusade were arduous\, exposing travellers to unfamiliar climates and diseases. The military orders took in the sick and provided them with beds\, professional physicians\, and all-round medical care\, especially in the Crusader States. The knights’ military and financial exploits have long fascinated the modern public\, but the medieval public was as likely to know the crusading knights for their highly developed medical services. \nDr Dominic Selwood FSA FRHistS is a historian\, barrister\, author and honorary research fellow at the University of Exeter. He writes on history for the Daily Telegraph and other papers\, and presents regularly on television and radio. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford and a DEA from the Sorbonne\, both in medieval history \n———- \nPresenting The Many Lives of the Medieval Wound Man (Flavell Lecture)\nTo be given by Dr Jack Hartnell \nThe Wound Man\, a medical diagram depicting a figure fantastically pierced by weapons and ravaged by injuries and diseases—was reproduced widely across the medieval and early modern globe. In this lecture we will follow the figure through its over 600-year history\, tracing the emergence and endurance of this striking curative image from medieval Europe to the present day. \nDr Jack Hartnell is Head of Research at the National Gallery\, London. He is an art historian and curator whose work focuses on cross-continental visual cultures of premodern science\, broadly defined to include the artistic materials of medicine\, cartography\, and mathematics\, most recently with a strong emphasis on premodern Jewish art and culture. His books include Medieval Bodies (2018)\, which was a Sunday Times History Book of the Year\, and Wound Man (2025)\, which won the 2026 Otto Gründler Prize for outstanding contribution to medieval studies.

An insider’s look at how the Glasgow Commonwealth Games were planned\, mobilised and delivered\, from operations\, infrastructure and logistics to workforce\, venues and the thousands of hours required to bring a major international event to life. Fascinating insights for all to learn about. \nOur after-dinner speech will be by Paul May – Chair and Co-Founder of Trivandi\, the organisation that have facilitated the FM at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and have been involved in other mega events such as the London Olympics. \nWe far too often consider FM simply in terms of the office workplace and ignore all the work that happens in other sectors such Healthcare\, Transportation\, Education and Stadiums\, up and down the country. Paul will provide a forward thinking reflection on the power of mega events to shape cities\, inspire people and leave a lasting legacy. Drawing on the lessons from the Glasgow Games and the transformative impact of the 2012 Summer Olympics\, he’ll ask ‘what makes a great host city?’ and reflect on a future Olympic bid too. \nJoin the Pattenmakers and their guests on the 16th September 2026\, to celebrate what makes FM & the Built Environment such a fantastic sector to work in.

DESCRIPTION:Audrey Few Lecture – The Care of Strangers: Frontiers of Humanitarian Action – by Mr Christopher Lockyear \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 \nCare in conflict zones asks more of humanitarians than clinical or programmatic competence. Christopher Lockyear examines what happens when they are thrust into geopolitical crunch points: their role in accountability and testimony where journalism is banned\, their responsibility to their own teams\, and what they concede to reach a patient at all. \nGood intentions are not the only measure when the act of care is itself a form of geopolitical capital. The lecture asks who is spending that capital\, on whose behalf\, and what we should do about it. \nChristopher Lockyear has spent two decades providing medical care where war had stopped it\, in Sudan\, Somalia\, Palestine and Ukraine. For seven and a half years he was Secretary General of Médecins Sans Frontières\, an organisation of nearly 70\,000 staff across more than 70 countries\, and spoke for it at the United Nations Security Council. He is now Executive-in-Residence at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy\, a senior adviser to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue\, and a non-executive director of TRIAL International\, which fights impunity for war crimes.

In this lecture\, Professor Easton explores how anger\, resentment\, even hate\, can arise in an increasingly pressured NHS\, and how these dynamics shape frontline care. Drawing on key insights into “difficult” clinical encounters\, from Freud’s account of the origins of hate to contemporary studies of hostility in healthcare\, he asks how we might protect the compassion at the heart of practice. Bursting with orchestral colour and atmosphere\, this miniature masterpiece of Russian Romanticism conjures a magical\, dreamlike world that feels both mysterious and utterly transporting. Mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron then joins the Orchestra for the world premiere of Hannah Kendall’s I have discovered the secret of death. One of today’s most exciting compositional voices\, Kendall brings a powerful contemporary perspective to this eagerly anticipated new work\, commissioned by the LSO. \nThe evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5\, one of the great orchestral masterpieces: a thrilling journey from darkness to triumph\, filled with unforgettable melodies and sweeping emotion. By turns tragic\, passionate and heroic\, it remains one of the most moving works in the symphonic repertoire.
