SUMMARY:Art in the City Exhibition: Illusion – the Inquisitive Eye
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming exhibition\, “Illusion – the Inquisitive Eye\,” will be held at the stunning Painters’ Hall in the City of London from 14th to 16th October. \nThis event showcases exceptional works exclusively from Livery Company members\, each artist exploring the theme of ‘Illusion’ through their unique perspectives on visual deceptions and mysteries in art. \nCurated by Tim Wright and Tuesday Riddell\, both Company members\, the exhibition will also feature guest curator Timothy Spall\, who will open the event and discuss the artwork and the Company’s connection to the City. \nA supplementary display will highlight the Company’s history\, including a handwritten note from Sir Joshua Reynolds and a portrait attributed to Robert Peake the Younger\, a likely member of the Company. The organisers are also thrilled to present a 19th-century Madonna and Child painting\, restored by Lucia Scalisi and framed by Liveryman Derek Tanous\, with both experts available on October 14th to discuss their work. \nThere will also be a programme of related talks and demonstrations. The exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm with free admission.

DESCRIPTION:The annual Inter Livery Real Tennis Competition is to be held at Queen’s Club on Wednesday 6th November 2024.\nThis is a doubles handicap tournament under the auspices of the Tennis & Rackets Association (“T&RA”). There will be a maximum of 24 pairs split between two competitions.\nThe day will start with registration\, tea\, coffee and pastries\, and\, after play\, will conclude with a drinks reception and a black tie dinner.\nMasters\, Liverymen\, Freemen\, partners and friends are encouraged to join their teams for the drinks reception and dinner. \nYou are invited to submit applications for pairs of players who are both members of your Company\, Free or Liveried\, and who are members of the T&RA. The deadline for applications is 6th September 2024. Should you be unable to find a partner within your own Company\, please still submit the application and the organisers will endeavour to match you with a suitable partner if there is space available. \nSuccessful applicants will be informed by Friday 13th September and required to make payment by 20th September.

DESCRIPTION:There will be a Livery Prayer Vigil on Tuesday 4 February 2025 at St James Garlickhythe\, London EC4V 2AF\, between 3.30 and 5.30 pm\, organised by WC Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (WCCSA). \nThe thinking behind it is that\, in common with society at large\, the Livery has members troubled by illness\, bereavement\, worries about jobs and families\, financial troubles – to name a few of life’s difficulties. Not to mention the state of the world and national concerns that should worry us all. This prayer vigil is intended as a Livery contribution to spiritual\, social and personal well-being\, with an emphasis on low-key\, quiet prayer and meditation. The vigil has been designed to facilitate easy drop-in for anyone who wishes to participate. \nRev Andy Rider\, WCCSA Company Chaplain\, will Preside\, with six 15- 20 minute focused sessions\, each with a different format\, led by an experienced prayer leader. \n3.30 – 3.50: Welcome\, Introduction\, Session 1: Pray for The City\, the Livery and civic affairs\, WCCSA the Company. SUMMARY:Sleep\, Colour and Light: A Free Lecture by Prof Stephen Westland
DESCRIPTION:This free lecture will introduce the importance of sleep on health and wellbeing and the role that colour and light plays in healthy sleep. Increasingly\, today people are not getting enough sleep and this can have many adverse health effects including increased risk of diabetes\, heart disease\, cancer and obesity. The role of colour and light on our sleep is only just becoming known. The talk will describe some research at the University of Leeds in this area. The implications for lighting design at home\, in care homes and in the workplace will be discussed. The talk will be illustrated by PowerPoint slides and followed by a Q&A. \nStephen Westland is Professor of Colour Science and Technology at the University of Leeds. He has published widely in the area of colour science\, including over 250 refereed publications and two textbooks. SUMMARY:Metropolitan Science: London Sites and Cultures of Knowledge and Practice\, c. 1600-1800
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The London Archives as Rebekah Higgitt and Jasmine Kilburn-Toppin talk us through their new publication\, exploring distinctive practices in the artisanal\, mercantile\, and governmental sites of London. \nMetropolitan Science provides a new perspective on what is often known as the Scientific Revolution\, involving significant changes to understanding and exploitation of the natural world in the late 16th to 18th centuries. Rather than focusing on famous philosophers or learned societies\, it argues that institutions associated with commerce and trade\, as well as city and national government\, created unique environments for the production\, testing and use of knowledge. In London\, a growing centre of industry and empire\, such institutional sites brought together a wide and productive range of people\, projects and materials that made them both creators and users of new knowledge and practices. \nIn this talk\, co-authors Rebekah Higgitt and Jasmine Kilburn-Toppin will introduce the book and reflect on how they made use of archives at The London Archive and Guildhall alongside other sources to draw out the voices of artisans and reveal the roles of knowledge and skill. Through the use of case studies\, such as the Tower of London’s Royal Mint\, and the Livery Company Halls\, they examine the city’s sites of exchange for knowledge and practice and highlights the importance of both public and private spaces. \nAbout Metropolitan Science: \nBeginning with the demographics of London in the 17th and 18th centuries\, including its attraction of migrants\, importance as a centre of empire\, and the role of its institutions in government\, the authors analyse how and why London was a unique site of scientific activity. Through the use of case studies\, such as the Tower of London’s Royal Mint\, and the Livery Company Halls\, this book examines the city’s sites of exchange for knowledge and practice and highlights the importance of both public and private spaces. \nWith exploration of London’s military and colonial history\, the authors acknowledge how its port and maritime trade were not only central to growth and protection\, but also facilitated the organisation\, assessment\, valuation\, and pursuit of knowledge in the city. Ultimately\, this book demonstrates that London corporations produced unique knowledge communities that drew on networks across the city and beyond and uses a variety of spatial and material approaches to reveal the use\, representation\, and exchange of practice in these collective settings.

DESCRIPTION:Italian Renaissance Ceramics at Apothecaries Hall\nTo be given by Justin Raccanello \nVisitors to Apothecaries’ Hall walk past its amazing collection of drug jars on every visit\, in the Shop\, the Armada Hall\, and the Parlour. A small number were made in London\, but the majority of the collection are Italian jars\, or albarelli. It’s easy to take them for granted. \nBut each one has a story to tell. There are tell-tale signs present on all of them that indicate their place of manufacture and who they were made for\, not just what they used to contain when in use in the Apothecary shop. \nAnd to unlock their stories we have Justin Raccanello. He specialises in early Italian ceramics\, exhibits at Frieze and TEFAF Maastricht and has written on the subject. He regularly takes part in London Art Week with new and tempting exhibitions. \nThis talk is the first in a series aimed at exploring different aspects of our wonderful collections. DESCRIPTION:Dr Tessa Murdoch FSA worked at the Museum of London from 1981-1990 and at the V&A from 1990-2021. Her book Europe Divided: Huguenot Refugee Art and Culture was published by the V&A in November 2021. She was also consultant on a recent publication\, Great Irish Households: Inventories from the long eighteenth century (John Adamson\, November 2022)\, and is co-editing A Cultural History of Craft in the Age of Enlightenment with Dr Heike Zech for publication by Bloomsbury in 2025. \nThe Gideon De Laune Lecture honours the Royal Apothecary responsible for the Royal Charter that separated the Apothecaries from the Grocers’ Company\, and established the Society as an independent City Livery Company.

SUMMARY:Heart Sounds: The Rise of Cardiology in Britain and the Evolving Role of Professional Medical Societies
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the historical evolution of cardiovascular medicine in Britain\, highlighting its development from early generalist medical practices to the groundbreaking contributions of British pioneers in diagnostics\, therapeutics\, and surgical innovations that transformed the global management of heart disease. It will examine how professional societies\, such as the Cardiac Club (founded in 1922)\, played a crucial role in fostering specialisation by setting clinical standards\, promoting research collaboration\, and spreading new knowledge. A key theme will be the value of oral history collections\, which capture the personal experiences and contributions of influential figures in the field. \nDr Caroline Coats MBBS BSc MSc PhD FRCP DHMSA is Consultant Cardiologist to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital\, Glasgow and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. She is Lead Clinician for the Network of Inherited Cardiac Conditions Scotland. Dr Coats also has a long-standing interest in the history of medicine\, completing the DHMSA in 2004 and now lecturing on the course herself. As Archivist to the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS)\, she has transformed the display of the Society’s unique collection and co-wrote an accompanying volume\, A Bundle of History.  Heavily involved in the centenary celebrations of the BCS in 2022\, she established an ongoing oral history project collecting testimony from those involved in cardiovascular medicine past and present. \nGeoffrey Flavell’s career as a thoracic surgeon spanned the development of the discipline from the surgical treatment of tuberculosis to cardiac surgery. He was born in Wellington\, New Zealand\, and attended Waitaki and Otago schools.
