SUMMARY:John Locke & Sydenham Lecture – Dr Rupal Shah & Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan
DESCRIPTION:Lecture title: Unheard: On medical silencing (Sydenham Lecture) \nSpeaker: Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan \nSydenham lecture 2025\nWhen Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan was admitted to hospital as a patient she didn’t receive the pain medication that she told them she needed\, despite her being a senior doctor. It was in that moment she understood that something was deeply wrong with our healthcare system – medical silencing is pervasive and hindering patient safety and health equity.\nIn Unheard\, Dr Dhairyawan takes us on a journey through history to show how silencing patients has been ingrained in medicine from its inception. Western medicine has been built on the assumption that power should always lie with the doctor\, and that patients should be powerless to decisions made about their body if it is done to make them well. This\, alongside the prejudices of society\, has led to dramatic gaps in medical knowledge because for centuries people have not been heard. \nDr Dhairyawan offers a way to reshape our health system for a future where active and engaged listening is the new frontier. \nThe John Locke lecture presented by Dr Rupal Shah will be available shortly.

SUMMARY:English Delftware Drug Jars\, Reading the Runes – Alan Humphries
DESCRIPTION:Alan Humphries will show a wide variety of the different hand painted designs and drug labels on these seventeenth and eighteenth century jars. \nThere are the names of the contents. Look closely; some will have dates and the initials of their original owners. Understanding the style of painting – some of angels\, others of mythical creatures or floral swags – can inform us about where they were made. \nManufactured from c.1640 to 1780\, the shapes and decoration changed over this period. Imagine how impressive a shop wall full of these jars made as a set might be\, and how the beauty of the designs may have helped to convince customers of both the efficacy of the contents and the skills of their owner? \nA Librarian to the Thackray Museum\, Leeds which with 436 jars and 11 pill tiles is the largest collection of English Delftware drug jars anywhere\, Alan was appointed at its foundation in 1990 and remained in charge until he retired in 2021. Describing his interest “an obsession which still continues today”\, Alan has traced and catalogued around 2900 English jars to date. \nBookings open shortly.

SUMMARY:Putting London on the Map
DESCRIPTION:History In The Hall – Livery Committee Event \nMapping London: Creative Ways To Explore History \nFor over 20 years\, Matt Brown has been exploring and writing about London. But he’s also been mapping it. In this talk\, Matt will describe how maps can provide fresh insights into the city’s history and culture: from a retrospective map of Anglo-Saxon London\, to a complete map of every location mentioned in Dickens’s novels\, to his new best-selling book about the Boroughs of London. He’ll also reveal what he’s learned about the capital by spending hundreds of hours colouring in the John Rocque map of 1746. \nBiography \nMatt Brown is editor-at-large of Londonist.com\, and the main contributor to Londonist: Time Machine\, a newsletter about the history of London. In his 20 years as a ‘professional London explorer’\, Matt has waded along the buried River Fleet (twice)\, spent the night in a ‘haunted’ plague pit\, crawled through the little-known tunnel beneath the deck of London Bridge\, and walked along the tracks beneath Leicester Square at 2am. Matt is also author of 13 books\, including London Night and Day (2015)\, Everything You Know About London Is Wrong (2016)\, the bestselling/award-winning Atlas of Imagined Places (2021) and its sequel Atlas of Imagined Cities (2023). His latest book The Boroughs of London (2025) explores the history and peculiarities of London’s 32 boroughs. \nMatt particularly enjoys Q&A\, and invites you to come armed with any “I’ve always wondered…” questions about London (map-related or otherwise). \nMatt will be signing copies of his fascinating new book after the lecture. \nThe evening is open to members and their guests. Tickets cost £25 and include wine\, soft drinks and nibbles. Space is limited to 50 people so early booking is essential. \nThe event will also be streamed live on YouTube around the world! The code for the one-hour stream costs £10 and this is open to anyone. \nTickets:\n£25 includes the lecture\, wine\, soft drinks and nibbles\n£10 online / virtual only \nSchedule:\n6.30 PM Drinks reception\n7.00 PM Lecture begins in 3rd Floor Meeting Rooms\n7.50 PM Q&A\n8.00 PM Drinks& Nibbles\n8.30 PM Event Ends \nDress code: Smart Casual

SUMMARY:Whitechapel Lecture – IPM Alan Hughes ‘English bells; the sound of castings’
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Founders’ online lecture series ‘Whitechapel Lectures: Promoting Knowledge in Materials and Their Impact on Our Lives’ \nFollowing his popular “gallop” through a millennium of bell history during the Covid-19 Lockdowns\, Alan Hughes returns to the Whitechapel series to shine a spotlight on the most transformative era in British bell founding. Alan will concentrate on the changes that took place\, predominantly in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries due in large part to the influences\, and in one case intervention\, of four individuals wholly unconnected with the bell founding industry: a printer\, an inventor\, a Peer of the Realm\, and a clergyman. Each one of them has left a lasting mark upon the bells that we hear and those still being produced. \nAbout the Speaker:\nAlan was educated at Christ’s Hospital\, where he was a Skinners’ Company Presentee.\nOn leaving school in 1966\, Alan immediately joined the family bell founding business. He worked his way up through the company\, working in the foundry\, bell frame fabrication shop\, blacksmiths shop\, with the site working team and in the drawing office\, whilst studying Foundry Technology at what is now the University of the South Bank (LSBU). He became a shareholder and was appointed a director in 1972\, becoming the 4th generation of the Hughes family to own the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.\nAlan joined the Founders Company in 2000. He has served on the Industry Committee and since 2019 has been Honorary Secretary of the Historical Group. Alan is the fourth owner of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry business to serve as Master of the Founders’ Company.\nAlan has been happily married to Kathryn for 39 years\, and they have worked together at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry for most of that time. They have two children\, Jennifer who is a pianist and Lizzie who is an HR Manager\, and three lovely grandchildren.
