SUMMARY:A spoonful of sugar: polio\, public health and protection - Natasha McEnroe
DESCRIPTION:A spoonful of sugar: polio\, public health & protection \nFor the first half of the twentieth century\, polio was the most feared of all childhood diseases\, striking terror in the hearts of parents and children alike. The story of polio has many angles\, including a frenzied search for a vaccine\, the birth of modern fundraising and of the technology used to treat a condition with no cure. But how is polio represented in museum collections? In this lecture\, Natasha McEnroe will explore how historic medical material can help us consider healthcare challenges today. \nNatasha McEnroe is the General Secretary & Chief Executive of the Society of Antiquaries. She was the Keeper of Medicine at the Science Museum in South Kensington\, London. Her previous post also was Director of the Florence Nightingale Museum\, and prior to this\, she was Museum Manager of the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy and Curator of the Galton Collection at University College London. She is a Trustee of Dr Johnson’s House in London and of the Erasmus Darwin Museum in Lichfield and is a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of Barbers. \nElizabeth Garrett Anderson Lecture \nhttps://catalogue.apothecaries.org/product?catalog=FHP_Elizabeth-Garrett-Anderson-Lecture

SUMMARY:City Music Foundation Lunchtime Concert – Thomas Allery\, Aaron Akugbo and Claire Ward
DESCRIPTION:Three CMF Artists join forces to perform at the only City of London livery hall with an organ – Ensemble Hesperi’s Thomas Allery (also Director of Music at the Temple Church) Connaught Brass’ trumpeter Aaron Akugbo and soprano Claire Ward. \nTheir programme threads the music of two London City organists from different centuries around songs by the Baroque giant and London musician Henry Purcell\, and a rare outing of Alan Hovhannes’ Trumpet Sonata. The programme concludes with Bach’s explosive cantata for trumpet and soprano Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen\, sure to raise the high ceilings of the Merchant Taylor’s Hall.

SUMMARY:369th Clergy Support Trust Festival Service and Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The 369th Clergy Support Trust Festival Service brings together three world-class choirs under the magnificent dome of St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday 7 May 2024\, 5pm. \nIn 1655\, concerned with the welfare of clergy\, their children and widows\, livery and merchants of the City of London held a Festival to raise funds to support them. 369 years later\, a great deal has changed\, but Clergy Support Trust’s mission to serve those who serve remains the same. In 2023\, we supported over 2\,700 clergy households\, including 1 in 5 of all serving Church of England clergy. The Festival Service is a key staple in the Trust’s history\, livery history and choral music tradition\, with composers such as Edward Elgar composing arrangements specifically for our Service (‘Give unto the Lord’\, 1914). \nThis year\, Durham Cathedral Choir and Rochester Cathedral Choirs join St Paul’s Cathedral Choir in a majestic act of worship. We are delighted to welcome The Most Revd Andrew John\, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Bangor\, to give the sermon. Livery Masters are invited to process down the aisle as part of the Service. \nYou can now book your free tickets for the Service at www.clergysupport.org.uk/festival. For those who’d like to join us for our Festival Dinner\, a two-course buffet with wine at the beautiful Plaisterers’ Hall venue\, you can book your £75 tickets through the same link.

SUMMARY:The role of London medical students in the relief of Bergen-Belsen in 1945
DESCRIPTION:The Role of London Medical Students in the Relief of Bergen-Belsen in 1945 by Professor Stephen Challacombe – 10 April 2024 – In-Person \nHeld on Wednesday 10th of April 2024 at 6pm.\nVenue: Apothecaries’ Hall\, Black Friar’s Lane\, London EC4V 6EJ. \nIn early April 1945\, 96 medical students from the London Schools volunteered to help at Belsen concentration camp in the middle of Germany. On arrival\, they were assigned one of the 80 wooden huts to look after\, each of which housed up to 500 starving\, ill and emaciated inmates. War to the East continued. 45\,000 starving people inside the camp had had no food for weeks and no water for the last week. Typhus and TB were rife. The British Army had buried the piles of bodies but had made few inroads into the individual huts. The students set about looking after and delivering food and water to all the surviving inmates. The camp death rate dropped from 800 a day to below 50 a day within two weeks. The students assisted the inmates to be cleaned and move into a hastily constructed hospital of 14\,000 beds. At the end of four weeks the students flew back to Croydon airport\, gave back their uniforms\, returned to their medical schools\, and never met as a group again. This is their story. \nStephen is Professor of Oral Medicine at King’s College London (now part-time). He previously has held many University posts including Postgraduate Dean and Director of External Strategy for the KCL Health Schools. He is Past President of the British and International Associations of Dental Research and the British and European Societies for Oral Medicine\, and was honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine to the UK Armed Forces. He has published over 300 research papers and is co-author on nine books on food allergy and intolerance\, oral medicine; oral immunology. He retains a keen interest in sport\, especially rugby\, golf and tennis. He has been President of the Hunterian Society and of the RSM History of Medicine Society.
