SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Wounded (The Leslie Payne Memorial Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Shehan Hettiaratchy \n War causes severe injuries\, with limb trauma being the most common. If not managed well\, these injuries can lead to long-term disability\, but with proper care\, recovery is possible. Drawing on 20 years of experience in war zones from Afghanistan to Ukraine\, Shehan will discuss effective reconstructive strategies\, covering immediate surgical interventions\, early reconstruction\, and long-term support for war-injured populations. \nAbout Leslie Payne:\nFrom the early 1970s\, Leslie laboured long and hard as the Ballistic and Blast Archivist to the Department of Military Surgery at RAMC College Millbank. This unpaid work was carried out in addition to managing his busy dental practice. At the same time\, he was discretely advising security agencies in the UK. His areas of particular interest and expertise included blast biophysics and pathophysiology\, and penetrating civilian and military ballistic injury. \nLeslie was also a noted expert on stab injury and unarmed combat and worked closely with the London Metropolitan Police and the Association of Chief Police Officers of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland in these areas.

SUMMARY:Apothecaries\, Plants and People: A potted history of the Apothecaries and the Chelsea Physic Garden
DESCRIPTION:In this full-day event\, discover the collections and archives related to the Chelsea Physic Garden\, London’s oldest botanic garden founded by the Society of Apothecaries in 1673. \nYou will spend a morning at Apothecaries’ Hall in Blackfriars\, the oldest extant Livery Hall in the City of London. Attendees will engage with displays and short talks on botanical illustrations\, herbals and manuscripts and learn more about the people and plants that link the two organisations. Participants will also enjoy a lecture led by Medical Herbalist\, Frances Watkins\, which draws on the history and collections of the Chelsea Physic Garden and the Apothecaries. \nThe morning session will include refreshments and time for discussion before participants travel to the Chelsea Physic Garden where a hot lunch (included in the fee) is provided. Travel between the locations is not included but information will be provided on public transport options. \nThe afternoon session will include a specialised tour of the Chelsea Physic Garden connected to the archival material you explored at Apothecaries’ Hall. This will be followed by a lecture led by Eve Barro\, former Assistant Project Curator for the 350 Defining Plants Project which ran during the Garden’s 350th anniversary in 2023. SUMMARY:Annual Inter-Livery Regatta
DESCRIPTION:The highlight of the City Livery Yacht Club’s Programme of Events is the Annual Inter-Livery Regatta from Cowes where entrants battle it out on the Solent for the Lord Mayor’s Cup.  There is a Welcome Party Buffet at a Cowes Clubhouse on the Friday evening. Racing action will take place on the Saturday. There are (hopefully) two races\, the first commencing following a dockside briefing on the Saturday morning and a second race commencing in the early afternoon. A Presentation Dinner is held at the Royal Yacht Squadron on the Saturday evening.

SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Blackfriars District in the Age of Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:To be given by Prof Christopher Highley \nIn this talk Professor Highley will introduce a new digital project that he is part of called Shakespeare’s Theaterscape: London Playhouse Districts (1576-1642). Its goal is to better understand the place of particular playhouses within their urban contexts by mapping the surrounding neighbourhoods. In this period\, the Blackfriars neighbourhood was actually home to two theatres\, the first of which was eventually taken over and repurposed by the Society of Apothecaries. The memories of other notable buildings\, institutions\, and businesses like the glasshouse\, the King’s printing house\, and the parish church of St. Anne\, linger on in the names of local yards and lanes\, while others like the tennis courts\, fencing school\, and the mansions of leading aristocratic families have long vanished. By exploring the new digital map and discussing the historic sources underlying it\, we will get a more complete picture of the various sites and activities that made Blackfriars such a dynamic and bustling corner of life in the capital. \nChristopher Highley is Professor of English at The Ohio State University and the director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. His most recent book is Blackfriars in Early Modern London: Theatre\, Church\, and Neighbourhood (Oxford University Press\, 2022). \nRefunds\, minus a £5 admin fee (per ticket)\, will be offered\, upon request\, to anyone cancelling for any reason up to six working days before an event. DESCRIPTION:Transforming the materials agenda for a sustainable planet: Opportunities and challenges\, part of the Founders’ Whitechapel Lectures on materials and their impact in our world.\nSpeaker: Professor Mark Jolly\, FIMMM\, FICME\, CEng\, CEnv \nProfessor of Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing at Cranfield University \nWe live in a materials world. Everything we use is made from materials extracted from the planet. Yet\, our current way of making and using most materials follows a linear model: take\, make\, and dispose. This unsustainable approach is pushing the planet’s limits—if our production and consumption behaviours remain unchanged\, we would need 2.75 worlds to meet our demands. But we only have one. To secure a sustainable future\, we must transition to a circular materials world\, where we minimise the extraction of raw materials and maximise the reuse\, remanufacturing\, and recycling of existing materials. Achieving this transformation requires innovations in mindsets\, technologies\, business models\, and systems. \nLink to lecture\nMark is Professor of Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing at Cranfield University. He has over 40 years’ experience in manufacturing and materials. He spent 13 years working in industry in automotive and tier 1&2 suppliers into manufacturing both in the UK and abroad before moving into academia in 1995. In 2012 he joined Cranfield after 17 years at the University of Birmingham. He has managed over £17.5 M of research projects since 1999 and has over 350 publications\, technical reports\, articles and books. He was Director of the UKRI Transforming the Foundation Industries Research and Innovation Hub (TransFIRe)\, and co-Director of the Engineering and Physical sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing which offers a triple degree with the Universities of Warwick and Exeter. Mark is on the Royal Academy of Engineering National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC) working group on Materials for Net-Zero and sits on the Advisory Board for the Advanced School on Circular Metal Components for the Swedish Manufacturing Industry (CIRCUMET). Until December 2024 Mark was also co-Director of the Circular Economy Network plus in Transport Systems (CENTS). Mark has sat on the EPSRC Peer Review College since 2003 and sits on the council of the Cast Metals Federation. He has been a reviewer of research programmes for the European Space Agency (ESA)\, Enterprise Ireland\, the Romanian Government and CSIR in South Africa.  \nMark is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and sits on the Society for the Environment Honorary Fellows Panel. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials\, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)\, and is the chair of the Materials Processing and Manufacturing leadership group. He also sits on the IOM3 Sustainable Development and Light Metals leadership groups. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers (ICME). Mark was Chair of the Solidification Committee of The Minerals\, Metals and Materials Society (TMS\, USA) for two years until 2018. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Founders and Freeman of the City of London. \nWith his co-authors he is the recipient of the 2024 TMS Light Metals Warren Peterson Subject Award for Cast Shop for Aluminum Production with a the paper entitled “Defect Minimisation in Vacuum-Assisted Plaster Mould Investment Casting Through Simulation of High-Value Aluminium Alloy Components”. Mark was the recipient of the 2019 John Campbell Gold Medal awarded by ICME for “continual advancement in sustainable manufacturing and promotion of excellence in casting technologies”. He was the 2010 Winner of the University of Birmingham Josiah Mason Founder’s Award for Business Advancement and in 2008 was the recipient of the Oliver Stubbs Medal (ICME). \nHis main areas of current research are in circular economy and sustainability including resource efficient manufacturing\, process modelling and novel casting processes. He has worked with many well-known names across a number of sectors including Rolls-Royce\, Depuy-Synthes (Johnson & Johnson)\, Bentley\, Aston Martin\, BAES\, Finmeccanica\, GKN\, EnCirc360\, Kimberly-Clark Corporation\, Hanson Cement\, Constellium\, Siemens\, TPC AB\, Vesuvius\, St Gobain\, Luxfer\, Lucideon\, Pilkington Glass\, Trent Refractories\, and Coca-Cola. He has also championed working with many small companies especially SMEs who supply to large companies.

DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Dr Tim Cutler will focus on the life of Sir Hans Sloane and the story of the Chelsea Physic Garden. along with its modern recreation at the Royal College of Physicians. It will delve into the purpose of the original renaissance Physic Gardens in Italy which were attempts to “re create” the Garden of Eden. Finally ending on one of the oldest Physic Gardens in the City of London at Barber-Surgeons Hall\, originally created by the famous plantsman\, John Gerard and re-instated after destruction in the second world war\, which Dr Cutler now curates. \nDr Timothy Cutler MA MB BChir FRCP FLS\, is a retired Consultant Dermatologist. He is a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Barbers and the Hon. Curator of the Physic Garden at Barber-Surgeons Hall. He was the Royal College of Physicians’ representative on the Advisory Board of Management at the Chelsea Physic Garden (1996-2016). He is a Garden Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. He is a keen gardener at his home in Aldeburgh and also at his family farm in Southern Tuscany\, where the principal activity revolves around the production of premium-quality organic single-estate extra virgin olive oil.

The lecture will conclude with a panel Q&A session. \nProfessor Hervé Morvan leads the advanced concepts team at Rolls-Royce\, working for the Group Engineering\, Technology & Safety directorate and reporting to the Group Director for R&T\, on issues in the ‘beyond business as usual’. He also feeds into activities led by the Group Chief Strategy Officer\, on topics pertaining to the future such as energy transition and future markets. Prior to joining Rolls-Royce\, Hervé spent 15 years at the University of Nottingham where he led the Institute for Aerospace Technology\, receiving a personal chair in 2014 and being elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2016.

SUMMARY:Art in Medicine and Pharmacy Short Course
DESCRIPTION:Explore the historical links between art and medicine and pharmacy in the capital through this immersive short course set across six London museums and galleries across three days in September 2025. \nWednesday 17 September\nYou will spend a morning at Apothecaries’ Hall in Blackfriars\, the oldest extant Livery Hall in the City of London\, which has served the medical and pharmaceutical communities for over four hundred years. Attendees will enjoy a lecture led by Andrew Wallington-Smith on the stunning collection of stained glass at the Hall and a tour focussed on portraiture and the Hall’s notable Armada Painting. There will also be displays of ceramic pharmacy jars\, botanical illustrations and archives relating to the Hall’s painting collections. \nThe focus for the afternoon session will be ceramics and participants will be hosted by the Museum of the Order of St John at St John’s Gate. The museum tells the unique and fascinating story of an ancient religious military order\, from its origins caring for sick pilgrims in eleventh-century Jerusalem\, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance. The visit will include a specialised tour of the museum led by curator Rebecca Raven and a talk by Elisa Sani\, who published Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery in 2023. Elisa will speak on ‘From Venice to Malta – pharmacy jars for the knights of the Order of St John’. \nThurs 18 September\nParticipants will begin the day at the Science Museum in South Kensington. They will hear from Selina Hurley\, Curator of Clinical and Research Medicine\, and Rebecca Mellor\, Curator of Art and Visual Culture\, about the ways in which art are used to communicate in medicine – from advertising to art commissions. Following a short talk\, there will be a tour of Medicine: The Wellcome Galleries\, exploring the works of five artists who worked closely with curators to create unique pieces for visitors to enjoy. \nThe afternoon session will be hosted by the Royal College of Surgeon’s Hunterian Museum at Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Dawn Kemp\, Director of Museums and Special Collections\, will give a talk introducing art in the Hunterian\, with a focus on new research. Participants will have time to explore the museum and its collections\, with expert staff on hand. There will also be a talk by Bruce Simpson on War\, Art and Surgery with a focus on the work of First World War surgeon-artist\, Henry Tonks. \nFriday 19 September\nThe day will start at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum in Smithfield with a tour of the museum’s collections led by Catherine Walker\, Museum Manager. Participants will be able to explore the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s collections of Herbals\, in a session led by Karen Horn\, Librarian. Over time\, medicine and pharmacy have provided caricaturists with a wealth of material. Bizarre treatments\, exaggerated medical conditions and massive doses of pills have all provided artistic fodder. This will be explored in a talk by Briony Hudson\, Independent Pharmacy Historian: ‘An Art to Cure: Pharmacy in Caricatures’. \nThe final afternoon will be spent at Bethlem Museum of the Mind in Beckenham. The museum records the lives and experiences and celebrates the achievements of people with mental health problems. Its art collection comprises around 1\,000 works\, including paintings\, drawings\, ceramics and textiles. David Luck\, Archivist\, will provide an overview of the history of Bethlem Royal Hospital\, founded in 1247. Colin Gale\, Museum Director\, will introduce the museum displays\, with artists ranging from well-known Bethlem patients such as Richard Dadd and Louis Wain to McGlashan\, the otherwise unknown creator of the Little Traveller. There will be free time to explore the museum and an artwork analysis workshop based on William Kurelek’s ‘The Maze’. \nTravel between the locations is not included but information will be provided on public transport options. Participants can also choose to travel with the medical and pharmacy historians leading each day.’ \nPrices\n1 day (17th/18th/19th September): £125\n2 day (any combination): £225\n3 day rate: £300 \nDue to capacity we are limited to just 25 places per day.
