SUMMARY:From Coffee House to Fleet Street; An Archive Evening Celebrating London’s Newspaper Legacy
DESCRIPTION:A Library and Archives Committee Event \nJoin us for a celebration of this story\, and discover some of the documents which shed light on it – all of them safely stored in the climate-controlled vault in the Tokefleld Centre at Stationers’ Hall. \nFrom the lifting of press licensing in 1695 to Elizabeth Mallet’s pioneering Daily Courant\, discover how London’s first daily newspapers emerged from the culture of argument and debate which had long characterised London’s coffee houses. \nTrace the fascinating journey of London’s printing culture across the Atlantic – from Benjamin’s Franklin’s apprenticeship in Bartholemew Close\, near the Hall\, to the revolutionary presses of Philadelphia. Discover how adventures in book publishing extended the newspapers’ business model. \nHear of the formation of the Newspaper Makers in 1931\, with the Prince of Wales\, the future Edward VIII\, attending an early dinner. Explore the story behind the merger of the Stationers and the Newspaper Makers in 1932 – a move which led to women being admitted to the Company for the first time. \nReflect on how the move from solid Fleet Street premises to a born-digital world has changed the world of newspapers forever. \nSpeakers \nJonathan Grun is a former editor of the Press Association\, and President of the Society of Editors. He is a Westminster Guide. \nDr Margarette Lincoln is a Curator Emerita at the National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich\, London\, where she was Deputy Director until 2015. She has been a Visiting Fellow at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, and Visiting Researcher at the University of Portsmouth. \nRoss Hamilton is a former teacher in China and the UK\, and author of the book Cycling in Surrey (published by Bradt). He is an experienced tour guide in the City of London. \nThe panel will be chaired by Court Assistant Oliver Gadsby\, Chair of the Library and Archives Committee and President of the Independent Publishers Guild. \nTickets: \n£30 attendance at the Archive Evening\, with wine\, soft drinks and sandwiches \n£10 online / virtual only \nSchedule: \n6.00 Exhibition opens \n6.30 PM Drinks reception \n7.00 PM Presentation and discussion \n7.45 PM Q&A \n8.00 PM Drinks and sandwiches \n8.45 PM Event Ends \nDress code: Smart Casual

SUMMARY:Clergy Support Trust Festival Service and Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Our Festival\, one of the oldest choral music events in the world\, is unique and extraordinary. In 2026\, it celebrates 371 years\, running continuously since 1655 with only two breaks; during the pandemic (2020) and the London Blitz (1940). The Service brings together three exceptional cathedral choirs to perform as one\, under the magnificent dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. This year\, we welcome the cathedral choirs of Blackburn and St Albans\, alongside the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir\, for what promises to be a majestic act of worship. \nThe Service is a key date in the Church\, City of London and choral music calendars\, and over the years composers including Edward Elgar have written music especially for the event. It includes a majestic procession of Bishops\, Masters of Livery Companies*\, representatives of the City of London\, Stewards of the Festival and other dignitaries. The Service at St Paul’s Cathedral (5pm) celebrates the ministry of the clergy households we serve. Tickets are free. The Dinner at Plaisterers’ Hall (7pm) is a networking and fundraising event\, to support our vital work. Tickets are £150. \n*If you are the Master of a Livery Company\, or a Clerk booking on a Master’s behalf\, please do not book your tickets through this link. Instead\, please email us at festival@clergysupport.org.uk. All other Livery Members can book through the public link below.

SUMMARY:Norah Schuster: Life and Times of a Pioneer Cytopathologist
DESCRIPTION:Lecture title: Norah Schuster: Life and Times of a Pioneer Cytopathologist (Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Lecture)\nLecture speaker: Dr Tina Matthews \nNorah Schuster was born in the late 19th century to a professor of physics at Manchester who enabled entrance to medical education at a time when female students were not welcome. As a student WW1 placed Norah into pathology laboratories in Manchester\, and after qualification she followed her family to London and the greater availability of posts for women. Norah worked around South East England and published papers on general pathology and historical matters. She was a founder member of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1963 making a generous donation to start a library and later many significant books. She died in 1991 aged 99 years. \nLecture title: Oliver Sacks and the Hidden History of Neurodivergent Reading (MacDonald Lecture)\nLecture speaker: Prof Matthew Rubery \nOliver Sacks’s bestselling books played a pivotal role in raising public awareness of neurodiversity\, especially around unconventional or stigmatized forms of reading. Building on the concept of metagnosis\, or the belated recognition of a neurological condition\, this lecture proposes that Sacks’s humane and compassionate case studies helped many individuals become aware of their own cognitive differences for the first time. Rather than pathologizing atypical cognition\, Sacks’s narratives enabled readers to identify with neurodivergent experiences\, reframing so-called ‘bad’ or ‘impaired’ reading as simply different. This talk ultimately endorses Sacks’s idea of ‘reading pluralism\,’ advocating for a more inclusive understanding of reading that embraces the diverse ways in which people do it.
