SUMMARY:Visit to Finsbury Circus Gardens
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite you to a special visit to Finsbury Circus Gardens\, the largest green space within the City of London at approximately 3 acres. Previously used as a Crossrail worksite during the construction of the Elizabeth Line\, the gardens sit almost directly above Liverpool Street’s Elizabeth Line station. Following the completion of the works\, the site was returned to the City of London Corporation\, with funds allocated for its reinvigoration. \nThe City Corporation’s Open Spaces team has led the transformation project\, which is now nearing completion—the builders are about to leave! \nAfter a brief introduction\, Jake Tibbetts\, Manager of City Gardens at the City Corporation\, will provide insights into the challenges faced during the project and the complexities of designing and delivering the new gardens. \nFollowing our tour\, those who wish can join us for refreshments at Gail’s in Liverpool Street Station for further discussions and networking. \n🚶‍♂️ Important Information: \nThe visit takes place outdoors\, so please dress appropriately for early May weather. While there is some shade\, the sun can be strong.\nThere are no toilet facilities in the Gardens\, but facilities are available at Liverpool Street Station.\nGroup size is limited to 20 participants\, so book early to secure your place! \n🌿 A perfect time to visit\, as the building works are finishing—don’t miss this unique opportunity!

SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Wounded (The Leslie Payne Memorial Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Shehan Hettiaratchy \n War causes severe injuries\, with limb trauma being the most common. If not managed well\, these injuries can lead to long-term disability\, but with proper care\, recovery is possible. Drawing on 20 years of experience in war zones from Afghanistan to Ukraine\, Shehan will discuss effective reconstructive strategies\, covering immediate surgical interventions\, early reconstruction\, and long-term support for war-injured populations. \nAbout Leslie Payne:\nFrom the early 1970s\, Leslie laboured long and hard as the Ballistic and Blast Archivist to the Department of Military Surgery at RAMC College Millbank. This unpaid work was carried out in addition to managing his busy dental practice. At the same time\, he was discretely advising security agencies in the UK. His areas of particular interest and expertise included blast biophysics and pathophysiology\, and penetrating civilian and military ballistic injury. \nLeslie was also a noted expert on stab injury and unarmed combat and worked closely with the London Metropolitan Police and the Association of Chief Police Officers of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland in these areas.

SUMMARY:Worshipful Company of World Traders Golf 2025
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the serenity of the Halliloo Valley just north of Woldingham\, in the heart of the Surrey North Downs\, Woldingham Golf Club’s excellent course and facilities have become a popular destination for golfers. The Club’s stately neo-classical style clubhouse offers spectacular views across the course and the valley beyond. \nDesigned by American architect Bradford Benz\, the golf course makes the most of the contours of the valley in which it sits. A par 71 course in excess of 6\,000 yards long from the yellow tees\, the course is built on a chalk base\, excellent for drainage which\, together with the USGA specification greens\, allows year round play. Golfers will decide for themselves their favourite holes\, but for sheer beauty\, the 4th and 7th at the far end of the course\, in the bowl of the valley\, will take some beating… Our day includes coffee and bacon rolls on arrival\, 18 Holes of Golf\, dinner\, followed by prize giving. Great value for £100.00 (Non–golfers attending dinner only £40.00). \nCome and enjoy yourselves! As in previous years’\, we will do our best to make everyone feel special throughout the day. Entries will be limited to 20 teams of four and places will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis. Individual entries will be formed into teams of four. We recommend you book early. The Worshipful Company of World Traders Captain\, Steven Haydon\, will be delighted to welcome you personally on the day!

SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Blackfriars District in the Age of Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:To be given by Prof Christopher Highley \nIn this talk Professor Highley will introduce a new digital project that he is part of called Shakespeare’s Theaterscape: London Playhouse Districts (1576-1642). Its goal is to better understand the place of particular playhouses within their urban contexts by mapping the surrounding neighbourhoods. In this period\, the Blackfriars neighbourhood was actually home to two theatres\, the first of which was eventually taken over and repurposed by the Society of Apothecaries. The memories of other notable buildings\, institutions\, and businesses like the glasshouse\, the King’s printing house\, and the parish church of St. Anne\, linger on in the names of local yards and lanes\, while others like the tennis courts\, fencing school\, and the mansions of leading aristocratic families have long vanished. By exploring the new digital map and discussing the historic sources underlying it\, we will get a more complete picture of the various sites and activities that made Blackfriars such a dynamic and bustling corner of life in the capital. \nChristopher Highley is Professor of English at The Ohio State University and the director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. His most recent book is Blackfriars in Early Modern London: Theatre\, Church\, and Neighbourhood (Oxford University Press\, 2022). \nRefunds\, minus a £5 admin fee (per ticket)\, will be offered\, upon request\, to anyone cancelling for any reason up to six working days before an event. After this time\, no refunds are available.
