SUMMARY:John Locke Lecture and the Sydenham Lecture
DESCRIPTION:John Locke Lecture: Hate in Healthcare: from Freud to the Frontline – Prof Graham Easton and the Sydenham Lecture: Why are doctors so miserable? – by Prof Clare Gerada \nSociety Members: Lecture & Drinks £20 / Lecture & Supper £60\nNon-Members: Lecture & Drinks £25 / Lecture & Supper £65 \nPresenting Hate in Healthcare: from Freud to the Frontline (John Locke lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Graham Easton \nOnline abuse\, verbal and physical assaults\, protective screens\, and zero tolerance posters all point to a growing tension between healthcare professionals and patients. In this lecture\, Professor Easton explores how anger\, resentment\, even hate\, can arise in an increasingly pressured NHS\, and how these dynamics shape frontline care. Drawing on key insights into “difficult” clinical encounters\, from Freud’s account of the origins of hate to contemporary studies of hostility in healthcare\, he asks how we might protect the compassion at the heart of practice. Could a clearer ethical frame\, in the spirit of John Locke\, help doctors and patients recognise the humanity in each other and rescue a relationship under strain? \nProf Graham Easton is Honorary Professor of Clinical Communication Skills at Queen Mary University of London\, a GP of 30 years’ experience\, and a National Teaching Fellow with Advance HE. His career spans clinical practice\, medical education\, and BBC journalism\, with a particular interest in training doctors in empathic communication\, including how to manage “difficult” and aggressive consultations. \n———– \nPresenting Why are doctors so miserable? (Sydenham Lecture)\nTo be given by Prof Clare Gerada \nProf Clare Gerada trained initially in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital before becoming a GP in South London\, where she has practised for decades.\nLeadership roles:\n• Former Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) (2010–2013).\n• President of the RCGP (2021–2023).\n• Founder and Medical Director of NHS Practitioner Health\, the confidential service for doctors and dentists with mental health or addiction problems. \nAdvocacy: A leading voice on doctors’ wellbeing\, burnout\, and professional identity. Clare has been instrumental in destigmatising mental illness among healthcare professionals. \nPublic service: Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2020 for services to mental health and the NHS. \nPeerage: Clare became a Life Peer in the House of Lords in 2025 as Baroness Gerada \nPublic speaking and writing: Clare frequently speaks and writes on topics such as compassion in medicine\, the emotional labour of doctors\, and the cultural meaning of the NHS.

SUMMARY:LSO 20th Anniversary Annual City Livery Concert and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating two decades\, the Annual City Livery Concert has become a much-loved fixture in the City of London calendar: both a vibrant showcase of the rich arts and culture of the Square Mile\, and an opportunity for the LSO to express its gratitude to the companies\, clubs and guilds whose continued support enables world-leading music-making on their doorstep. \nConducted by LSO Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano\, this year’s programme opens with Anatoly Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake. Bursting with orchestral colour and atmosphere\, this miniature masterpiece of Russian Romanticism conjures a magical\, dreamlike world that feels both mysterious and utterly transporting. Mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron then joins the Orchestra for the world premiere of Hannah Kendall’s I have discovered the secret of death. One of today’s most exciting compositional voices\, Kendall brings a powerful contemporary perspective to this eagerly anticipated new work\, commissioned by the LSO. \nThe evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5\, one of the great orchestral masterpieces: a thrilling journey from darkness to triumph\, filled with unforgettable melodies and sweeping emotion. By turns tragic\, passionate and heroic\, it remains one of the most moving works in the symphonic repertoire. We invite you to bring family to share in this celebratory evening\, and there are a wide range of restaurants and dining options in the Barbican and surrounding area should you wish to make a full evening of your visit. \nThe concert will begin at 7pm. Ahead of the performance\, you are warmly invited to a pre-concert reception from 6.15pm. The reception will continue in the interval. \nTickets cost £68 per person\, or £58 per person for a group booking of ten or more guests. Please book your tickets via https://www.lso.co.uk/Livery2026. For group bookings of ten or more\, please contact the LSO directly at rsvp@lso.co.uk. \nWe hope many Liverymen and their guests will be able to join us for what promises to be a memorable evening of music.
