Livery Companies vary widely in the way they welcome new members, who become Freemen and later Liverymen.

Some Companies do not actively seek new members, while others represent particular professions and may require specific qualifications. To join a Company, an applicant must usually be sponsored by at least two Liverymen who know them personally. If a prospective applicant does not already know existing members, the Company Clerk may be able to offer guidance or introduce appropriate contacts.
Applicants are encouraged to attend several Company events with their sponsors. This allows them to understand the character and activities of the Company, meet members, enjoy its fellowship and consider the expectations and opportunities that membership provides.
