In 2020, the City of London Corporation adopted a radical Climate Action Strategy, breaking new ground and setting out how we will achieve net zero, build climate resilience, and champion sustainable growth in the UK and globally by 2040.
Since adopting the Strategy, the Corporation has committed to:
• Achieve net zero carbon emissions from its own operations by 2027
• Achieve net zero carbon emissions across its full value chain — including investments and supply chain — by 2040
• Support the whole Square Mile to reach net zero by 2040
• Invest £68 million by 2027 to support these goals, including £15 million dedicated to preparing the Square Mile for extreme weather events
This work follows an extensive study of our activities and assets, setting out a plan to address emissions across operational buildings, property and financial investments, and our full supply chain.
Significant progress has already been made, including a 28% reduction in value chain emissions and a 60% reduction across our own operations since the 2018/19 baseline. Climate resilience has been strengthened across the Square Mile, with projects tackling heat and flood risks and delivering more greening and tree planting as part of long‑term adaptation measures.
