Garden of Remembrance: Honouring Service, Celebrating Unity

Last Updated on 05/11/2025

On Monday 3rd November 2025, the City and Livery Garden of Remembrance Service returned to the tranquil garden of St Paul’s Cathedral, bringing together over 350 guests in a moving tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. This cherished event, now a cornerstone of the Livery calendar, was originally organised by the Royal British Legion (RBL) until 2020. When the RBL stepped back, the Livery Committee, at the request of the Lord Mayor, stepped forward to ensure its continuation.

The day began with a muster and breakfast in the crypt of St Paul’s at 09:30, attended by over 280 Masters, Prime Wardens, Upper Bailiffs, Clerks, and civic dignitaries. After warm refreshments, guests heard heartfelt addresses from Julia Sibley MBE, Chair of the Livery Committee, and Lynda Atkins, National Chair of the RBL. With precision and charm, our ever-reliable Brace of Beadles, John Cash and Jon Perkins, organised the procession, leading attendees into the garden for the Service. The rain thankfully stayed away.

A Ceremony of Unity and Remembrance

The Service welcomed the full Civic Party, RBL Standard Bearers, over 200 Livery Masters and Clerks, and a host of civic and military guests. Over 30 Uniformed Youth Cadets and school children joined the Service, and their presence brought a vibrant energy and a meaningful connection to the next generation of remembrance. As tradition dictates, named wooden crosses sourced from the Poppy Factory were prepared for the planting ceremony, each one a symbol of personal and collective memory. Following the Service, more than 100 guests gathered at Grocers’ Hall for a convivial lunch, continuing the spirit of fellowship and reflection.

The Livery Committee extends heartfelt thanks to all who made the event possible and to the many Livery Companies and Guilds whose generous donations supported the event and enabled substantial grants to both the Royal British Legion and St Paul’s Cathedral. The Livery Committee is honoured to have delivered this special event — by the Livery, with the Livery and for the Livery. We hope to continue the success of this memorable occasion and look forward to your unwavering support again in 2026.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
