The British Red Cross (BRC) helps people across the UK and around the world to get the support they need when crisis strikes. Their work focuses on connecting human kindness with human crisis, from hiring a wheelchair or supporting someone experiencing loneliness, to helping people adjust to life in a new country, the BRC is there whenever needed.
They work in partnership with Red Cross and Red Crescent societies globally to prevent or ease human suffering. In the UK, they provide practical and emotional support during emergencies, and they also assist trafficked people, individuals in forced labour, refugees, and asylum seekers as they recover and rebuild their lives after trauma.
The City of London and its Livery Companies have a long history of supporting the City of London branch of the British Red Cross through several key annual events:
Christmas Market at Guildhall
An organised and sponsored Christmas Market is held at Guildhall, offering the ultimate festive shopping experience with more than 100 stalls selling handmade and unique gifts. Visitors can enjoy wellness talks, a fashion show, delicious treats in the Café in the Crypt, and street‑food stalls in the yard. A lively auction forms part of the event. This major fundraiser raises more than £150,000 each year.
Jailed & Bailed
The BRC’s annual “Jailed & Bailed” event invites selected Livery Masters to take part in a light‑hearted and hugely popular fundraising tradition. Participants are “arrested” by the City of London Police in the presence of the Sheriffs on humorous, fabricated charges created by their Clerks.
After coffee with the Lady Mayoress, they are taken to the Tower of London, where they are “tortured” with sponsored champagne and a splendid lunch. In exchange, participants commit to raising a substantial “bail payment” from their fellow liverymen, colleagues, family, and friends to secure their release.
This enjoyable annual event raises many thousands of pounds for the BRC.
London Bridge Collection Day
Each year, Livery Masters take part in a Collection Day on London Bridge, wearing their full livery robes. This colourful and commanding spectacle delights both residents and visitors, who are encouraged to donate to the British Red Cross.
