As of the 16th May 2023, the Worshipful Company of Constructors has planted 7,000 trees to help it become the first Livery Company to achieve carbon Net Zero.
The trees will remove 28 tonnes of CO2 per year from the atmosphere.
Buildings and construction account for nearly 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.
The Worshipful Company of Constructors established a Climate Action Committee back in 2021 with an aim to use its networks and influence to help address the climate and biodiversity emergency in construction and the built environment. Since the Committee’s inception it has established a task group structure of five working groups: Climate Action & Policy, Supporting the City of London and Livery Climate Action Group, Climate Action Scholarships and Skills, Industry Influence and Engagement and Impact Reporting. Our committee is growing, and it currently has 28 climate committee members.
The Company produced its “Climate Action Plan” in 2021/22 and published its final version on 31st October 2022. This led a “Carbon Reduction Plan” which was published in March 2023. The plan calculated the Company’s emissions and has allowed it to reduce its emissions and then consider how to carbon offset.
Alderman Alison Gowman, Founder and Chair of the Livery Climate Action Group, said –
Huge congratulations to the Constructors’ Livery who are leading the way in their plans and in the execution of them and the holistic approach they have taken. They are talking and advocating important messages about the impact of climate but are also taking actions for themselves and assisting others to reach net zero.
Robert Beale, the Company’s Climate Action Chair added –
This is only the start, and we will continue to support The Livery Climate Action Group as core group members, we will continue to be involved in the City Biodiversity plans and the City of London Corporation climate initiatives, we will continue to support the scholarships programmes and the work we are doing with the “City of London Skills for a Sustainable Skyline”. Finally, we will continue to reduce our carbon footprint and run events which will make an impact and change like the iRecycle event “Canal Clean-up” which we will be undertaking in 2023.
