The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme (MHSS)
Registered Charity No. 1087486
The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme is a prestigious educational charity operating under the auspices of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. We award scholarships for Master’s level study (or equivalent professional training) in the UK, specifically for subjects supporting the financial and professional services sectors.
Building Global & Local Leadership
The majority of our awards support international applicants at the early stages of their careers—individuals poised to become future leaders and influencers in their home countries. By fostering these academic and professional links, MHSS strengthens the enduring relationship between the City of London and the global business community.
Global Reach: Since being founded in 1997/98 by Sir Richard Nichols, the scheme has awarded over 208 scholarships across more than 70 countries.
Developing Nations: Half of our participating countries are defined as ‘Developing’ by the OECD.
UK Expansion: Since 2019, the scheme has also supported domestic scholars within the UK, assisted by regional Liveries and Guilds in cities such as Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, and Edinburgh.
Governance and Support
The scheme thrives on the generous donations and pro bono support of the City Livery Companies. Beyond financial contributions, many Companies provide vital mentorship and invite scholars to formal Livery events.
Our Board of Trustees reflects the scheme’s deep roots in the City, currently including former Lord Mayors, Past Masters of the Great Twelve Companies (Mercers’, Grocers’, and Drapers’), members of the Court of Aldermen, and legal professionals from the Old Bailey.
